Former CFO Arrested for Fraud in Christiana
CHRISTIANA – Members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit arrested a 45-year-old former Chief Financial Officer of the Lekwa Teemane Local Municipality on Monday, November 4, 2024. The suspect is accused of fraud and violating the Municipal Finance Management Act in connection with the procurement of motor vehicle rental services for the mayor.
The arrest took place in Heidelberg following an extensive investigation. Authorities allege that between April and May 2022, the former CFO arranged vehicle rentals for the mayor without adhering to the required supply chain management processes, bypassing necessary approvals from the municipal manager. This misconduct reportedly led to a financial loss exceeding R167,000 for the municipality.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Christiana Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, where they will face three counts of fraud and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act. The case underscores ongoing efforts to tackle corruption in local government and uphold financial accountability.
