Dear MORONGWA News, motivated Grade 12 class of 2026 in the DrRSM and beyond: Never settle for 30-40%. In demanding fields like engineering, top marks (70%+ in core subjects) are your ticket to acceptance at leading universities, scholarships, and to a brighter future. Chemical Engineering is a high-impact, in-demand career that’s among South Africa’s scarce skills list, perfect for problem-solvers who want to transform raw materials into valuable products, from fuels and medicines to sustainable energy solutions.

Why Chemical Engineering Chemical engineers design and manage processes that convert materials into everyday essentials: turning coal into fuel, crops into food products, or developing eco-friendly materials. It’s a blend of chemistry, physics, maths, and innovation, with strong job prospects in mining, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and renewables. Graduates often register as Professional Engineers with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) for global mobility and career growth.

To qualify for a BEng/BSc in Chemical Engineering (ECSA-accredited for professional status): Key Subjects to focus on are; Pure Mathematics (essential, not Mathematical Literacy) and Physical Sciences (or Physics + Chemistry). English for communication and reports.

Minimum Marks: Typically 60-70%+ in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, plus bachelor’s pass NSC.

Our Advice: Target 70-80%+ in Maths and Physical Sciences (and overall strong results) to meet competitive APS scores, stand out for selection, and access bursaries from companies like Sasol, Eskom, or government programmes.

A 4-year BEng/BSc Chemical Engineering is standard, followed by practical training and professional registration. Here are top options (check 2027 updates on university sites, as requirements evolve): University of Pretoria (UP), BEng Chemical Engineering: APS 35+, English Level 5 (60%), Mathematics Level 6 (70%), and Physical Sciences Level 6 (70%). Strong Gauteng choice with excellent facilities. University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), BSc/BEng Chemical Engineering: APS 42+, English Level 5, Mathematics Level 5, Physical Sciences Level 5 (higher marks improve chances; very competitive). University of Cape Town (UCT), BSc Chemical Engineering: High requirements – aim for 80%+ in Mathematics, 70%+ in Physical Sciences. Includes extended options for support. Stellenbosch University (SU) , BEng Chemical Engineering: Applications open April 2026; strong focus on 75%+ Maths, 65%+ Physical Sciences, overall 70%+ average for selection. North-West University (NWU), BEng Chemical Engineering (Potchefstroom): 70%+ in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, 60%+ in English/Afrikaans. APS around 34+; closer to Bloemfontein learners.

Other strong options: University of Johannesburg (UJ) – BEng Tech Chemical Engineering (APS 30, Maths/Physical Sciences 60%+); University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and more.

Salaries for Qualified Graduates: Around R250,000–R400,000+ per year (R20,000–R33,000+ monthly gross), depending on company and location. Petrochemical giants often start higher.

Grade 12s, Chemical Engineering rewards hard work with innovation, impact, and solid earnings. Start strong in your finals, apply via CAO/Central Applications Office early, explore NSFAS, bursaries, and engineering councils. You’ve got the potential, go for those high marks!
