MAMUSA – Imologa Community Projects, in collaboration with Ipelegeng Community Policing Forum, Phaphama, Relemogile Organisation and Amalia Victim Empowerment, hosted their Second Annual event to address drugs and alcoholism in their communities.
The event, which was also a commemoration of 16 Days Against Women and Children Abuse, kicked off on Wednesday, 14 December 2022, with a walk from the traffic circle in Ipelegeng township to the multipurpose centre where the rest of the event was held.
The initiative, which had as its theme “killing drugs through sport”, began with various sports activities which included visual arts, performances and indigenous games.
According to the event organiser and CEO of Imologa Community Projects, Tebogo Olifant, the event was successful in attracting up to 400 attendees in comparison to 2021. “We are so excited because the youth came in large numbers from surrounding townships to participate in multiple activities”, Olifant said.
The activities under sports included; soccer, tennis, basketball and volleyball. Indigenous games covered; mmela and chess. Artistic activities consisted of drawings, paintings, music and dance.
Commenting on the purpose of the whole event, Mr Olifant stated that Imologa Community Projects thought it would befitting to give young people a chance to showcase their talents and to expose them to other recreational activities. “ The aim is to develop talent of the young ones, take time to fine-tune their talent rather than having them just sitting around without anything to do, or doing things that will lead them to the abuse of illegal substances.”
“We believe that this initiative is growing rapidly, looking at the numbers we pulled in the previous year compared to this year. More and more young people have started to show interest in this initiative, and most importantly, they are saying yes to the killing of drugs.”
Imologa aims to grow this initiative into a district project where they would be targeting to rescue other young people who are hooked on drugs throughout the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati.
“To the young people who are hooked on drugs, there’s an organization that is reaching out to you. It is never too late. There’s no fee to pay, give us a chance to help you. You will thank us”, concluded Olifant.
