Residents across the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati (RSM) District were left battling extreme heat today as temperatures climbed well above 35°C in several towns and villages.
According to local temperature readings, Taung recorded the highest temperature at a scorching 38°C, followed by Christiana at 36°C, Bloemhof at 35°C and Vryburg at 35°C. Morokeng A reached 34°C, Morokweng B stood at 35°C, while Ganyesa recorded 34°C. Some areas of Christiana were reported slightly lower at around 34°C.
The intense heat made outdoor conditions uncomfortable and potentially dangerous, particularly during the peak afternoon hours. Temperatures are expected to begin dropping gradually after 19h00 as the sun sets, bringing some relief to residents.
Health practitioners and safety officials have warned community members to take extra precautions during extreme heat conditions. Residents are strongly advised to avoid walking or working in direct sunlight, especially between late morning and early evening when temperatures are at their highest.
People are urged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing, and seek shade or remain indoors where possible. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, people with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heat exhaustion.
Farm workers, construction workers, and those whose jobs require prolonged outdoor activity are encouraged to take frequent breaks, work during cooler hours where possible, and immediately seek medical attention if symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, headaches, or nausea occur.
Residents are also advised not to leave children or animals inside parked vehicles, even for short periods, as temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.
Authorities continue to appeal for caution as high temperatures remain common during this period, urging communities to look out for one another and prioritize health and safety during extreme weather conditions.
